About five months ago, I felt myself coming down with a cold. It didn’t take long for it to carry on to my husband… Then I stumbled upon this happy accident.
As pretty much all parents know and everyone else can imagine, it’s tricky to manage 3 kids while sick. It’s a favorite of no one.
Through nothing other than hunger, I got up (sick and all) and made a large batch of jalapeno poppers (because we have an over abundance in our garden, not because I thought it would help– we still have a ton as of this writing, by the way; it’s crazy!).
I ate about 8 of these (4 whole jalapenos), and then I got busy and didn’t think much of my cold. I figured I’d start the usual remedies in the afternoon, vitamin c tablets and various oils. But something amazing happened; by the afternoon, I was fine. I figured with the stress I was under, this cold was going to be pretty serious, but I felt great.
Fast forward a few weeks when I felt something else coming on, I decided to give this trick another try, and it worked the same. To make it sound more scientific, I had duplicated the result, but wanted more ‘samples’.
Well this time, my husband was coming down with the same thing. Luckily, my husband isn’t a terror when the man-cold comes on, but who isn’t miserable during sick days? I decided to try my alleged cure on him (seeing as poppers are safe to test on humans, this seemed ethical).
Within hours, it worked again! My husband, who doesn’t like jalapenos outside of salsa– and tolerates them in poppers– was up with barely a cough. The next day, we were out of cold territory.
I just prayed my kids didn’t catch it, because it would take a lot of convincing and bribery to get the children to eat poppers… if that.
UPDATE: We have since used it several over the last year with the same results. In fact, I have been cold and flu free for the longest stretch in a long time (knock on wood…). Because I have been recovering from a myriad of illnesses in recent years, I am usually the first to get hit and the hardest hit by illness in my family.
I knew we were onto something, so I did some research, and it turns out there is a reason jalapenos cure us so efficiently. They contain:
- Capsaicin-this has been found to destroy cancer cells and bacteria. It also contains anti-diabetic properties. (These results have come from fairly new research, but it is being conducted by a well-respected research firm.)
- Vitamin-C-we all know doctors recommend vitamin c for colds, and 1 serving of jalapeno contains more vitamin-C than a cup of raw greens or about 198% of your recommended daily amount. This is way better than popping vitamin-C tablets because a natural source is always WAY better!
- Vitamin-A, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, lutein, zea xanthin, and crypoxanthin- these antioxidant substances help protect the body from free-radicals generated from stress and disease.
There are also so many benefits of jalapenos not even related to preventing a cold, so you should definitely consider adding these babies to your meals more often.
I love jalapenos on pizza and in salsa (obviously), but my favorite way of eating them is with this very simple, delicious jalapeno popper recipe.
- 8 Jalapenos, halved with the seeds and stem removed
- Cream Cheese
- Bacon, 4 slices
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350°. Fill the center of the jalapenos with cream cheese (I just do this with my hands). Cut the bacon slices in half, and wrap each half around the filled jalapenos. Place on a baking sheet, and bake for 10-15 minutes.
Serve with a hot cup of water with lemon and honey, and you should be good as new in no time!
There has never been a more delicious way to recover from a cold! What are your favorite non-conventional cold remedies?
