This week I’m taking a break from tips to cover our trip to Torrey. If you’re like most people we say that to, the next question is: “Where is that?” That’s because Torrey is one of those tiny little towns in Utah that even Utahns don’t really know about (we’re talking less than 200 people in population. It’s like you leave and they have to change the sign… which is kind of part of its charm). So let me add it to your bucket list of places to visit (or at least help you feel included next time the ‘small towns I’ve heard of’ conversation comes up).
TORREY: It’s a small town located by Capitol Reef National Park; it is absolutely stunning, and one of my favorite places to visit. I mean, really, barring a beach in Cancun, can it get more picture-perfect than this?
My grandfather lived here, and we visited frequently when I was a kid. But my family ties go even further back than that; my great-great-great grandfather helped settle it.
We enjoyed a fantastic week of fishing, hiking, and ATVing. It was perfect!
… Well, except for one fishing trip in Lower Bowns lake.
Lower Bowns was the big hole of water where we decided to go fishing the second day into the trip. We unpacked, cast out the poles, and that’s where it went south.
We got bitten by ants, eaten by mosquitoes, and burned by sun on all the areas where I missed sunscreen (darn that small part in my hair– so easy to forget). And then we didn’t even catch a single fish– yeah, not even one we could throw back. All in all, my husband and I looked back with fondness on this rough patch in the trip and chuckled how badly the fishing went.
Then we hiked to Hickman Bridge…
This was a blast! The walk is fairly easy and the bridge is beautiful (seen below). My little 2 year-old insisted on hiking the entire 3 miles. Luckily, my family who went with us were exceptionally patient, and she was so proud she made it the whole way.
Self-Admission: I did just this when I was 2 (insisting on walking), but I didn’t do it happily. My mom said I screamed the entire time. In fact, I screamed if they carried me, and I screamed if I walked. Thankfully, Evee didn’t follow in those footsteps.
Hopefully I’ve convinced you– Capital Reef is one of the prettiest parks in Utah! Worth a trip? Definitely. Would my husband recommend bringing cheese balls for the road? Always.
Big trips can be fun now and then, but vacations don’t have to be expensive to be memorable and special!
