A while ago I did a post on little things you can do to save money over time. I have had so many people comment that they were on board with everything except ditching the paper towels. So my question is, what would it take for you to give up paper towels?
PAPER TOWEL… less?
My family has been paper toweless (I don’t think that’s a word…) for years now, and when we have guests over, someone almost always asks me for a paper towel. Of course I don’t have one and they think I’m weird handing them a rag or micro fiber cloth. But we don’t even think about it. Part of me has even come to relish in my ‘weirdness’.
SWITCHING TO MICRO FIBER
We just grab a microfiber cloth for spills or cleanups or a cloth napkin for messy faces and hands at dinner. It’s faster, better and makes less trash.
Now, trust me– I know that it causes more laundry, and believe me, I am not a huge laundry fan. I despise it less now… In reality, a extra couple of cloths a day really doesn’t make all that much difference. Microfiber cloths actually absorb a lot more and makes messes easier to clean. It’s even the best way to clean glass!
Tip: Get a pretty bowl for the top of your washing machine to store dirty rags. This way they aren’t left to mold in the bottom of your laundry basket. This may or may not have happened to me a
few many times…
Rags and Riches…
The average family uses 2 rolls of paper towels per week. Even at Costco paper towels cost about $2 per roll, putting us at $4 per week. Small change right now, but in 5 years it equals over $1,000. That’s nothing to sniff at. Micro fiber cloths last well beyond that, costing only a few bucks up front.
As a bonus, you will have the warm fuzzy feeling of saving the planet a bit which in my book is a major win!
Something like this is really a small change anyone can make; it’s easier and saves some pocket change each week. So again, that takes me back to my first question: what would it take for you to make the switch?
