So after months and months of the back to forth and the feelings of guilt no matter what, I went on the hunt for a better solution. I decided that I could spare 30 minutes in my day for cleaning.
Most days, I would clean the room that needed the most help until it was absolutely spotless and vacuumed, but the rest of the house would be ignored. And when the kids inevitably messed up the one clean room, I was not a happy mama.
I set a timer for 5 minutes per room, and I was amazed at the results!! I discovered that I can clean a lot in 5 minutes, I mean A LOT! Yes, the rooms aren’t spotless after only 5 minutes, but they are pretty darn close. I just start with what will make the biggest difference and work backwards from there.
This has become my go to after coming home from the gym in the morning. I have my kids do their chores and clean their room while I spend 30 minutes on my “tornado clean” as we have come to call it.
I spend 5 minutes in the living room, dining room (if it needs it), kitchen, office, and master bedroom, and I clean as fast as I can. My girls clean their own room (which means it’s usually in various stages of a mess, but one step at a time….), and our guest room usually doesn’t need anything. That equals 25 minutes, but I add an extra 5 minutes of “float time” that I allocate to the messiest room or put toward the guest room or laundry room should they need it.
You really can’t argue with the results! After only 5 minutes in each room (except the kitchen; I added my float time in there)…
Ideally, I do a tornado clean at night after the girls have gone to bed (which is not as often as I would like…), I use the 30 minutes in the morning to get to the nitty gritty in each room. I haul a vacuum with me, and I dust, and wipe down walls, organize book shelves, launder sheets–things like that. No more chore charts or check lists for me! I just do what needs to be done.
My bathrooms I tackle once a week when my husband takes my kids to the library for an hour which is another story…
This one simple thing has worked wonders in helping keep on top of everything! I still clean up after meals, and I set a 10 minute clean up timer after play time each day and have the kids help out, but most of my cleaning happens during my 30 minute “tornado” sessions, and I love it!
How do you stay on top of all your household cleaning?
