It all started with The Bachelor…
I loved to watch the show every Tuesday evening (I watch it the day after because we have Hulu instead of cable or satellite), but I don’t like to watch it alone. It’s one of those dysfunctional “guilty-pleasure” shows that’s made so much better when you can comment on it with someone else!
So I did what most wives have probably tried to do at some point: I tried in vain to convince my husband to watch it with me. And like most wives– it didn’t take. Until I came up with a good bribe/compromise…
I would make him whatever food he wanted for dinner if he would watch it with me… And he reluctantly relented.
Tuesday Night Begins
The first go round (Chris Soule’s season), my husband requested steak, mashed potatoes, and corn. Excited to start, I whipped everything together and we sat down for episode one And you know what? We had a blast! We talked over the crazy dates and how Chris needed to stop rambling.
Week after week we looked forward to the food and the show. We always had everything from lobster, red curry, sushi, pizza, and of course, lots of steak.
But then The Bachelor ended, and we were both really sad (more myself than my husband, but he missed the food and odd-lot women I’m sure); we both realized Tuesday had become our favorite day of the week.
We spent one week lost, wondering what we’d do now. We both agreed it was really fun to look forward to Tuesday, and we wanted to keep the good thing going– so we came to a reasonable conclusion: we would just watch something else. And since we had a lot classic movies we wanted to see, we figured it wouldn’t hurt to get more cultured either. So classic movie night was born.
We made a list of all the classic movies we’ve always wanted to see but haven’t, and the ones we’ve seen and loved and would like to revisit. And to be honest, now we love Tuesdays even more! That’s right, better than Bachelor days.
Since this has been going on for a while, I’ll give the shortlist of the many movies we’ve watched so far (specifically the ones we’ve enjoyed the most):
- Casablanca (by far our favorite to date!)
- All About Eve
- Harry Potter movies
- Forrest Gump
- Jurassic Park
- Some it Like it Hot
We love having an inexpensive “bonus” date in the week (as a perk: thanks to Tuesday Night Movie Night Classics, I feel like I get a lot more of the Gilmore Girls references). We still have a lot of classics on the list to watch, and we love trading off who picks. It’s made the adverse “Day-After-Monday” day a big hit in this house!
